Nidd Valley Road Runners held their prestigious Guy Fawkes 10 at Ripley last weekend and with the race full sign going up a month before places were highly sought after. Starting in the village the course winds around the villages of Birstwith and Hampsthwaite the usual views over Nidderdale and the impending hills were shrouded in thick mist. Leeds City A.C's Jack Simpson took an early lead and went unchallenged to the end, taking the course record with 54.56. He was followed in by Joseph Kirkup, East Hull Harriers in 58.20 and Chris Miller, Harrogate Harriers in 58.23.
First Lady across the line was Helen Cross, Pocklington Runners in 63.52, second Sarah Clumber, Halifax Harriers in 64.19 and third Emma Yates, York Knavesmire in 64.34.
The previous day two Nidd Valley Runners headed north for the Helvellyn 15km Trail race. Paul Geary had a strong run with 1:20.57, while Chris Buck recorded 1:29.43. Saturday's parkrun saw six black and gold vests tackle the three lap course. Maurice Kelly swept round in 21.06, Jon Reast recorded a pb of 24.40, and Dave Rushton 25.09, Julie Mooney 27.26, Lizzie Medwell 29.47 and Ann Rushton 31.41 completed the team.

Strength in Numbers
The finale of Nidd Valley Road Runners club championships took place at the Harewood 10 mile trail race and with points up for grabs there was a good turnout. Taking an early lead Lee Dalton found the previous weeks racing had not left anything in the tank and despite a final surge had to settle for second in 60.09. Tim Harvey 64.50 and Paul Stalker 70.05 ran strongly to be first mens team back, unfortunatly no team prizes were awarded. They were followed in by Jonathon Easton 77.02, Simon Harris 77.43, Phil Fernyhough 82.54, first lady for Nidd, Fiona Deacon 84.18, Phil Robinson 84.29, Paul Manning 85.03, Helen Gregory 92.00, Sheena Jackson 93.06, Jenny Manning 99.54, Rachel Eastaff 101.35, Annie Burns 103.25, Bob Sweeting 112.00 and Lizzie Medwell 112.43. Steve Newton opted for the 5 mile and finished in 41.35.
On familiar ground Carol Morgan and Emma David went to Dublin for the Marathon. All the pieces fell into place for Carol who recorded a pb of 3:13.03, Emma finished in 3:51.38.
The first snow of the season greeted Harrogate's parkrunners but did not hold them back. Six brave souls from Nidd Valley competed and managed to finish within seven minutes of each other. Alison Iles was first back with 23.43 followed by Jon Reast 24.59, Emma Dooley 25.03, Dave Rushton 26.01, Amanda Metcalfe 26.44 and Ann Rushton 31.17.

Black and Gold shine bright on the horizon
The Shaun Lee Johnstone Trail race gave runners a tough challenge last weekend, mud, mist and the odd small pond to navigate. Nidd Valley Road Runners saw Lee Dalton romp home to win at his first attempt, increasing his half way lead from fifteen metres to fifty at the finish and despite taking a wrong turn broke the course record with 58.48. Close behind Tim Harvey secured sixth place in 1:03.25 and Carol Morgan won her age group with 1:12.56. Next was Christine Holleran in 1:23.33, Annie Burns 1:40.51 and Judy Greenwood 1:45.06.
On the east coast Bridlington Half enticed three Nidd Valley Runners out of their beds for an equally murky race. Simon Smith's good form continued with a pb in 1:38.14. Next home was Fiona Deacon in 1:43.42 and Michelle Smith in 1:59.19.
Across the water Amsterdam Marathon saw Andy Todd in action. A solid performance gave him a time of 2:57.28. Closer to home and a little muddier the Duathlon at Helwith Bridge gave Brian Sherwood the race of his life, a 23 mile bike ride sandwiched between two 4 mile runs all completed in 2:40.
The usual suspects were at Harrogate parkrun and were joined by a record number of Nidd Valley Road Runners. Jonathon Easton was first back in 20.31 followed by Nick Iles 23.18, Paul Manning 23.48, first lady, Helen Gregory 25.23, Stuart Hatfield 26.07, Steve Newton 27.05, Julie Mooney 27.17, newbie Dave Rushton 27.56, John Manning 28.59, Aimi Blueman 30.30, another newbie Ann Rushton 31.36, Diane Gregory 33.28, Rebbecca Ventress 36.33, Margaret Manning 37.51 and Yvonne Manning 40.07.

Everyone's gone South.
The Fell running section of Nidd Valley Road Runners completed their season
with a trip to the UKA Fell Relay’s in Shropshire at the weekend. This was their
second attempt at a team event littered with international and world class
athletes. Teams run solo or in pairs over four legs and Nidd Valley sent two teams
of six. The open team of Paul Geary, Tim Harvey, Lee Welsby, Simon Harris, Carol
Morgan and Andy Harris finished a superb 82nd out of 176 teams. The vets team
of Sarah Chalmers, Brian Sherwood, Maurice Kelly, Steve Newton, Phil Robinson
and Tony Ledwaba-Chapman finished in 142nd place.
Continuing Nidd Valley’s reputation at marathon running, Alison Iles and
Emma Dooley headed over to Liverpool to complete their first 26 mile event. Both
commented on how well organised this was and highlights were running through the
Mersey Tunnel and finishing in front of the Liver Building. Emma crossed the
line in 3:54.37 and Alison 3:54.49. Closer to home Paul Manning was the sole
Nidd Valley Runner at the Richmond Castle 10km. A favourite of Paul’s he clocked
50.56.
Harrogate parkrun continues to grow in numbers, hitting the 200 mark
again. Four Nidd Valley Road Runners were amongst the Saturday morning crowd.
Andy Todd was first home and 5th overall in 19.06, followed by Jonathon Easton
20.45, Stuart Hatfield 24.59 and Tony Ledwaba-Chapman 26.06.

Weather you do or weather you don't
I thought I had better try and come up with a relevant and topical heading to try and match up to Simon's blog writing skills!
The text I recieved from our Chairman about the half marathon in Prague was very descriptive about the heat and humidity! However, I'm not sure I believe him because Simon and Michelle both finished in excellent times of 1.41 and 2.13 respectively. Well done both.
There were a few Jolly Holly Joggers out at Ripon yesterday - did anyone wear their Santa hats? It must have been strange running that race in the warmth of spring. I remember needing ice skates last year. So well done to everyone who ran - I understand Mike Deacon was first home and there was a battle to the finish between Fiona and Christine but I haven't got all the details of everyones results.
Annie and Judy and Debbie ran the Blubberhouses 25 today which I'm very jealous about as I have had to sit around being lazy resting ready for next weekend! Well done girls hope you all had a great day out.
If you are racing please remember to let Simon know your results and what the race was like so that he can make you famous in the Harrogate Advertiser! Also, if you do a particularly interesting race, or if you have a good experience at a race (or bad I suppose!) why don't you write a race report for the web site? There's only one on there so far but it would be great to some more....Annie, Judy and Bob what about one from the Grizedale race? Particularly with Bob doing so well on his come back race? You could write something on word or on email and send it to me so that Mark can put it on the web site. Photos too if you can.
This week is two normal club runs as there is no training on Tuesday as I already mentioned. Good Luck to anyone doing the fell race at the weekend - I hope it's a good turnout.
Have a good week
Emma

Ilkley Fell Race Versus Snake Lane 10!
Hello all
Is this a day to go down in club history? More people at a fell race than a road race? I think so! 16 Nidders (as we were described earier) turned out to brave the mud on the moors, and as I understand from Phil, there were lots of smiles coming in to the finish (well, that bit was down hill) and some excellent times. Well done to first timer fell queen Helen with her first fell running injuries!
However I must not be biased as there was a great turn out at Snake Lane and some amazing times there too. I think the interval training is paying off guys! Well done to absolutely everyone who raced this weekend, and don't forget to let us know your times so that you can be famous.
Talking of famous, did everyone notice that we are on the front page of the Advertiser this week? You have to squint hard at that picture but the one in the sports section is bigger! If anyone has any more pictures of Awards Night that would be suitable for publishing on the club web site please feel free to email them to me and I will forward to Mark the web master (who didn't win the prize for the biggest gloves on the racing circuit today Phil!). If you have a look at the web site you will notice that the 2011 club championship races are published there, both road and fell, so get your entries in quickly to avoid disappointment.
This week it's intervals as usual on Tuesday at Slingsby Walk again for mile repeats this time. Meet at the club to leave promptly at 7 or meet us at Slingsby for about ten past.
There will be a Sunday run this week hosted by me. Let's meet at Pannal Train station car park and do about 8 miles mainly off road from there. 9.30 start.
Well I think that's all for now folks, so happy running and see you on Tuesday.
Emma
PS: Don't forget your subs are due!

Seasons Best Times
I've created a new Results page on the website and added a spreadsheet showing this years seasons bests in various distances and age categories. Please check it out and let me know if you think you have a better time from an event I've missed. As well as the usual suspects, some of you will be suprised to see your name 'in lights', so well done and perhaps this will give you some incentinve to improve over the season. At some point I'll get round to putting up all the results from this year for prosterity!
