Racing to the end of the year.

Nidd Valley Road Runners are continuing to compete in a variety of races as the year draws to a close. The Tour of Pendle saw three runners head west for this tough event over 16.8 miles and with nearly 1500 metres of climb . Carol Morgan lead the way for the group and finished just over the 3 hour mark with 3:03:20, Emma David showed great determination and crossed the line in 3:42:33, Chris Buck followed with a time of 3:52:56, a great achievement in his first full year on the fells.

In warmer weather Andy Harris took on the Florence Marathon and faired well with a time of 3 hours 57 minutes. Jillie Townend never passes up the opportunity to race at different events and went to Oakham for the Nene Valley 10 miler described as a  diverse 2 lap course through parks, urban areas, a woodland trail, through underpasses, down steps and over motorway bridges avoiding bollards and posts with a bit of road thrown in, it keeps the senses alert all the way around. Jillie took full advantage and set a new 10 mile pb with 89:40.

Guy Fawkes goes with a bang

Ripley Castle was the fantastic venue for the start of the Up and Running Guy Fawkes 10 organised by Nidd Valley Road Runners at the weekend. It has become one of the most popular 10 milers in the North of England and has constantly received great reviews for its organisation and marshalling in recent years, although the route is one of the most challenging with three big climbs.

Local lad Jack Simpson took the lead from the off and was never challenged, finishing in 55.26, just shy of the course record. At the finish he commented, ‘It is one of my favourite races and the undulating route suits me well’.
Second went to Paul Marchant from Rothwell and District Harriers in 56.24 and third went to Ian Fisher from Otley in 57.14.

The ladies race was not that cut and dried as Emma Yates was over taken by eventual winner Helen Cross just after half way, Helen from Pocklington Runners recorded 1:06:48 and Emma from York Knavesmire Harriers crossed the line in 1:07:57. Third lady went to Sarah Fawcett from Hallamshire Harriers in 1:08:41.

It is with great thanks to the sponsors of this years event, Harrogate Spring Water, Harrogate Osteopaths, DK Darts and Ridgeway Fitness and Health that it was all possible.

Making History at Nidd Valley.

For the first time in the clubs history Nidd Valley Road Runners sent a junior team out to race, for the past 30 years Nidd Valley have been exclusively an adult only running club but have recently taken the plunge to form a junior section. Valley Striders put on a group of races  held on mainly trail paths within Harewood Estate and include a 10 mile, 5 mile and 2 mile race. The juniors took on the 2 mile event and had a great experience. In the Year 9-10 group Sam Riley was 3rd and Alex Robinson was 6th, in the Year 7-8 group Oliver Kavanagh was 5th, brother Jacob was 8th in the Year 5-6 group and in the Year 3-4 group Jake Stalker was 6th, Dan Dalton 7th and  Daniel Burrell 9th.

In the 10 mile event Lee Dalton put the disappointment of the previous weeks 2nd place finish and went one better, at the 5 mile turn around he had forged ahead and finished a good minute in front of his nearest rival, his time of 63.18 reflected the tough conditions from the wind and recent rain. Next back for Nidd was Phil Robinson in 85.11, closely followed by first lady back for Nidd, Fiona Deacon 87.36, Annie Sweeting 108.31 and Sarah Chalmers 113.23. Opting for the 5 mile route Paul Stalker got caught up in the misdirection of the first 20 runners home and crossed the line in 39.37, Fiona Robinson finished in 57.22 and Bob Sweeting 58.35.

With Halloween came the chance to run in the first Chevin Chiller, a very scary 4.5 miles in the dark requiring head torches. Four brave Nidders took on the challenge, Carol Morgan was 2nd lady in 33.11, Chris Buck 37.30, Phil Robinson 38.14 and, first time for Nidd Valley, Vicky Marlow 54.00.

Mark David has been doing his stuff, firstly at Great Whernside, in a time of 48:34,  with 1500 feet of climb over 3.9 miles, straight up and back from Kettlewell. The following day he ran at Guisborough Three Tops, crossing the line in 1:31:19, climbing to 1600 feet for a  full blast of autumn on Roseberry Topping.

First timers and fast times

Having withdrawn from York Marathon a few months earlier, Lee Dalton made the decision to go and defend his Shaun Lee Johnstone 10 mile  title instead. The course was a lot drier than the previous year and as Lee headed out he was accompanied by eventual winner, Ian Fisher. After the first mile Lee had to settle for second place as Fisher surged ahead and went onto break Lee’s course record. Phil Robinson joined Lee on the start line and finished in 83.33.

The second big marathon of the month was at York for the inaugural Yorkshire Marathon, an oversubscribed event that attracted an international field. First back for Nidd Valley was an old hand at marathons, Andy Todd, crossing the line in 3:05.31. First lady back for Nidd Valley was Kathy Coates, this being her first marathon she managed an impressive time of 3:59.20. More first timers at the marathon distance were Dave Rushton 4:28.24 and Jillie Townend 4:28.34, both starting running less the two years ago at parkrun and progressing up to the iconic 26 mile event. Lizzie Medwell, another established marathon runner, crossed the line in 4:32.00 followed by the Moorse sisters, doing their first marathon, Phillipa recording 5:02.34 and Helen 5:11.02.

Across the valley in Bridlington Mike and Fiona Deacon tackled the popular Bridlington Half Marathon, a well established race along the coast. Both were pleased with their times, Mike with 1.35 and Fiona with 1.41.

Emma David has been ticking the miles off, the last of the Run Further Series saw her complete the Rotherham 50 for 3rd lady, this gave her enough for 2nd lady overall in the series and 1st in her age catagory. Meanwhile Mark David headed to Todmorden for the Race to the Summit and completed the 5 mile event in 41.05.

GB selection and last points opportunity

Bill Hitchcock is a relatively new member of Nidd Valley Road Runners but has been enjoying great success recently. He secured the fourth and final qualification slot for the GB team for next years European triathlon championships which will be held in June in Kitzbuhlen. The qualifying race was at Grafham water in Cambridgeshire and whilst he was only second in his  group out of the water he managed the fastest bike split to then loose ground on the run to drift back a couple of places.

Fell expert Carol Morgan took to her favourite area and completed the Langdale Horseshoe in 3 hours and 1 minute on what was a beautiful day. In the opposite direction fellow fell comrade Emma David was tackling the Wye Valley Ultra 50, a great triumph ensued as Emma took 3rd lady in 9 hours 30 minutes.
Andrea Bowen and Sarah Chalmers decided Withens Skyline fell race was their weekend outing and headed to Haworth for a mudtastic event. Andrea came home in 77.56 and Sarah in 87.18.

Two people who like a continental feel to their racing are Simon and Michelle Smith, this time heading to the amazing city of Munich for their annual marathon. Simon made his way round comfortably in 3:55.31 followed by Michelle in 4:32.31.
The last of the club championship races took place at Richmond and those needing to add their final points grasped the opportunity. Mike Deacon was first across the line for the club in 43.28, Christine Holleran had a tremendous run and took 2nd FV45 in 49.15, Dave Seaman crossed the line in 51.31 followed by Helen Gregory in 53.20, still recovering from Chester the week before, Rachael Prince finished in 59.31 and Judy Greenwood took 1st FV55 in 64.56.

Sunday 13 October 2013

October pb marathon, part one.

A procession of Nidd Valley Road Runners headed to Chester for the first of two pb potential marathons this  October. Chester greeted everyone with unseasonably warm weather but it still did not hold Nidd Valley back in their pursuit of a best time.
Carol Morgan swapped her fell shoes for her roadies and had an amazing run finishing sixth in her age group and eleventh lady overall in 3:10.11. Next up were the sub 4 hour group, a target much revered, this included Alan Davidson 3:39.44, Paul Geary crossing the line in 3:45.46, Phil Fernyhough 3:47.12 and a magnificent sprint finish from Brian Sherwood for 3:59.59. Not far behind came Paul Manning with a great pb 0f 4:02.34 followed by a string ladies, Debbie Gibson 4:11.10, Helen Gregory smashing her pb for 4:12.47, Jenny Manning, trimming her time to 4:17.53, Janet Carling 4:32.27, Rachel Eastaff 4:42.49 Anne Marie McPherson 4:49.52 and Brenda Loades 4:53.11.

Not to be out done Tony Ledwaba Chapman headed to the seaside at Mablethorpe for the East Coast Marathon, although disappointed with his time of 4 hours and 3 minutes he was running at 3 hour 30 pace for much of it.

Keeping the Nidd Valley flag flying on the fells Mark David has visited some local races. At the Orton Autumn Fair their 10km race gave his legs a good stretch and finished bang on the hour. The following week he headed over to Saddleworth for  a slightly longer race of 13km, finishing with 1 hour 30 minutes.

Saturday 5 October 2013

Leading ladies, leading the way

Nidd Valley Road Runners have had a string of leading ladies recently, across all terrains and a variety of distances. The Hardmoors 60 attracts a dedicated crowd and friends are made along the way, Carol Morgan needed just such camaraderie, as with 10 miles to go found the company of another lady runner a great help, both crossing the line in 11 hours 31 minutes for joint first lady and 7th overall.
Further north Jillie Townend completed the Redcar Half Marathon for Nidd Valley, an easy option on paper but with a coastal finish the wind had other ideas. However it was no match for Jillie as she recorded a new pb for a half in 2:03.21.

Another Nidd Valley lady giving it her best was Kathy Coates taking part in the Major Series North 10km, she had the bit between her teeth and the scars to prove the obstacle course was no walk in the park, finishing as 3rd lady overall.

A more traditional race over at York was the destination for Mike and Fiona Deacon, the Sutton on the Forest 10km is a low key event over mixed terrain. Mike Deacon was first back in 42.53 and Fiona secured 2nd F45 with 46.09

Swim, cycle, run, rest!!

You could feel the anticipation around Fountains Abbey at the weekend as the biggest event in the area slowly took shape. National interest surrounding the Brownlee Triathlon had attracted a wide variety of people to both enter, marshal and spectate, in what was to be their first triathlon experience.

Four runners from Nidd Valley went up, the atmosphere was amazing and the Brownlee brothers were in attendance for most of the event, Christine Holleran had an amazing day, drawing on her previous experience she came in 3rd lady in her age group with a time of 50.03. First timer Phil Fernyhough admits he is not the strongest swimmer but made up tremendous ground on the bike and run leg, finishing with 51.50. Another first timer, Helen Moorse, may have found her calling, with an outstanding swim  and bike section she hung on in the run, crossing the line in 53.36. Jenny Manning celebrated her birthday with her entry and did herself proud with a solid time of 1:00.50.

Not too far away the rescheduled Yorkshire 10km was being run at Newby Hall. One Nidd Valley runner flashed the black and gold, Jillie Townend finished in 55.39. Meanwhile the fell runners at Nidd Valley were on the move for the Viking Chase 4 Peaks on the North York Moors, organised by Cleveland Fell rescue, this is a tough race over 13km of tricky terrain. First back for Nidd was Simon Harris in 1-22-36, followed by Mark David 1-25-26, Brian Sherwood 1-28-38, Sam Fugill 1-29-55, Phil Robinson 1-31-55 and Sarah Chalmers 2-05-05

Solid performances on solid ground

There’s nothing like a tough sounding race to get the juices flowing and The Yorkshireman Full and Half Marathon do not disappoint. Taking in Upper Wharfedale it certainly is a value for money event and refreshments at the end make the finish all the more welcome.
Tackling the Full Marathon was a ladies only affair for Nidd Valley Road Runners but they didn’t disappoint. Carol Morgan had a fantastic run, securing 3rd lady overall and 1st FV40 in 3:58.18, next in was Emma David in 4:33.51 followed by Sheena Jackson in 5:23.31. Seven Nidd Runners took on the Half Marathon distance which was not half the effort by any means. Tim Harvey had one of his best runs of the year, finishing 9th overall in 1:51.07, Alan Davidson followed him in with 2:13.01,then  Mark David 2:17.32, Brian Sherwood 2:23.14, first lady for Nidd was Christine Holleran 2:39.55, Andrea Bowen 3:04.08 and Sarah Chalmers 5:04.32.

Over at Wetherby the slick organisation of the Wetherby 10km suited four Nidd Valley Road Runners. Andy Todd found the cooler conditions this year to his liking and finished in 38.41, Lizzie Medwell was next home in 51.58. Two ladies making great improvements over the year are Emma and Kate Edgar, Emma timing at 52.05 and Kate breaking the hour in 59.56.

Tucked away in Leicestershire Emma Dooley set about her first Half Ironman, a 1.9km swim, 85km cycle and 21km run. After an eventful start in the swim Emma clawed her way up the rankings in the cycle and run elements, crossing the line in 6 hours 10 minutes in the top half of the field.

Bank Holiday Bonanza

With any Bank Holiday it brings the opportunity to race an extra day and Nidd Valley Road Runners sought out two popular events. Kilnsey Crag Fell Race is one of the shortest but toughest around and not many come away unscathed, thankfully  Tim Harvey and Mark David  were part of the few and recorded great times of 10.30 and 15.52 respectively. On more even terrain Spofforth Gala 10km will be remembered for quite different reasons as many of the runners were attacked by a swarm of hornets at the 4km mark and the medical services had to intervene, Rib Snow made it back safety in 49.05 followed by Andrea Bowen in 68.39.

The following weekend nothing quite as dramatic at the Tholthorpe 10km where the ladies at Nidd Valley were in charge. Carol Morgan finished 4th overall and 1st FV35 by some margin in 41.52 while Fiona Deacon was 2nd FV45 in 44.43. Other results were Mike Deacon 42.02, Dave Seaman 49.23, Sarah Donaldson 50.33, Dave Rushton 51.53, Ellie Deacon 53.49(pb), Jillie Townend 54.30, Phillipa Moorse 55.34 and Judy Greenwood 62.16. Up in the Dales the fell runners were having their own race at Bradley Show, Mark David had a strong run with 32.42, Andrea Bowen in her first fell race finished with 42.29 followed by Sarah Chalmers with 44.55.

The fell runners also managed to slip a few smaller races in too. Tim Harvey tackled the Burnsall Classic in 19.00 while Mark David continued his involvement in Esk Valley’s Summer Fell Series with the Inclined to Madness race running well for 57.33 and then the unusual Ilkley Incline of 1 mile straight up in a time of 10.40.

Friday 23 August 2013

A thorn amongst so many roses.

With many runners away for their summer holidays it was a chance for some to bag a good crop of points in the latest Club Championship race. Mike Deacon secured the biggest haul by being the first Nidd Valley runner across the line in 44.17, not far behind and keeping it in the family Fiona Deacon was first Nidd lady home in 44.38, taking 3rd LV45 to boot. Next came a parade of Nidd Valley ladies all eager for points, Debbie Gibson was next to arrive in 49.39, Sarah Donaldson 50.40, Jenny Manning 51.03, Jillie Townend 54.59, Phillippa Moorse 55.38, Rachel Prince 56.41 and then Aimi Blueman, breaking the one hour for the first time and taking a massive 9 minutes off last years time, recorded 59.54.

Doing the rounds of the local fell races, Mark David has been a familiar face in the past weeks. Starting at Arncliffe Gala Mark had a storming run and finished in 17.35 for the 3.3 mile route. Four days later at the Guisborough Grunt Mark took 2nd MV50 in an equally tremendous 55.17. With the bit between his teeth he made the short journey to Gargrave Show with Emma David and cruised round in 32.45 followed shortly by Emma in 34.34. Twenty four hours later Mark was back in action at Cray up in Wharefdale for their low key fell race, he had a good run recording 36.50.

Saturday 10 August 2013

Points mean prizes.

During the summer the racing scene continues with a mixture of on and off road fixtures to suit every taste. Nidd Valley Road Runners took to the hills in the search for points in the latest Fell Championship race. Round Hill Fell Race starts in Timble Village and winds it way across Blubberhouses Moor, it always attracts a good following and the recent Summer Fell Training saw a number of improved times across the Nidd Valley crew. Tim Harvey led the club home to finish 13th overall in a time of 1:02.54, he was chased home by Carol Morgan 1:11.35 who managed to edge out Alan Davidson, 1:11.35. Next across the line was Mark David 1:13.40, Brian Sherwood 1:16.05, taking to the fells for the first time this season, Rob Snow 1:18.13, Sheena Jackson 1:21.08, Chris Buck 1:23.21, Phil Robinson 1:25.36 and Sarah Chalmers 1:51.31.

For those wanting to stay on the tarmac, York Race for All had four Nidders heading that way. A crowded route had Dan Eagling securing a pb with 43.43, Emma Edgar crossed the line in 55.28, closely followed by Jillie Townend 56.07 and Kate Edgar 1:04.06.

A new race on the calendar is The Saltaire Shaker, an unusual 15 km distance in the familiar surroundings of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Tony Ledwaba- Chapman rocked up and came away with first V70 in a time of 1:20.54.

Saturday 3 August 2013

A Fell race or not a Fell race, that is the question.

When is a fell race not a fell race? When it is included in the Nidd Valley Road Runners main club championships. Although The James Herriot Trail Race  is included on the Fell Runner website Nidd Valley use it as a long race for calculations. There is a great team vibe up in Wensleydale as many clubs have a strong turn out. Ideal conditions gave runners a fantastic experience of an off road race. First back for Nidd was Andy Todd, 26th overall in 66.06, Paul Geary was next with 69.38 followed by Phil Fernyhough 72.32, Mark David 73.34, first lady for Nidd, Fiona Deacon 76.48, Rick Dallston 78.36, Paul Manning 79.05, Emma David 82.40, Dave Seaman 83.54, Debbie Gibson 88.03, Jenny Manning 90.02, Rachel Eastaff 90.11, back from injury, Dave Rushton 90.27, Phillipa Moorse 93.07 and Michelle Smith 100.12.

The previous day Emma David had travelled up to the Lake district for the Old Crownhill Round Fell Race, an incredible 24 miles of rugged terrain on the Caldbeck Fells. Emma had a fantastic run completing the run in 6 hours 10 mins and her efforts were rewarded with 2nd Lady.

A couple of late results saw Rachel Eastaff and Phillipa Moorse enter the Yorkshire Wolds Half, an incredibly tough race in some challenging conditions. Rachel crossed the line in 2:06 and Phillipa finished in 2:20. Jillie Townend has been travelling as far to races as the miles she has been competing. Laxton 10km saw Jillie running in 77 degrees of heat and finishing in 56.57.

Sunday 28 July 2013

A window of cooler weather.

Racing conditions could not have been better for the weekend as the cloud covered skies gave us a little drizzle early on.

Harrogate Town Centre 10km greeted four Nidd Valley Road Runners for its two lap course. Rick Dallston had a brilliant run to record 46.35, just behind was Sheena Jackson in 47.04. Sue and Jon Reast ran together and came in under the hour with 59.01 and 59.04 respectively.

With the Olympic Anniversary coming up it was fitting for Amanda Metcalfe to be inspired to complete another triathlon. The area around Castle Howard is undulating and the grounds provided an ideal setting for the swim and run. Amanda completed the mid distance course in 3 hours 22 minutes ready to move up to Olympic distance.

The previous day Ingleton Gala held their Ingleborough Fell Race, within easy reach of Harrogate this tough race attracted a large field. Mark David continued his fell season and finished in 74.43, another Nidd Valley at home on the fells is Chris Buck who crossed the line in 79.10. A rare appearance by Helen Gregory on the fells saw her record a time of 85.30.

Friday 19 July 2013

Sweet smell of success

Burton Leonard was on a knife edge as to whether it took place or not but everyone rallied round and it went ahead. A number of Nidd Valley Road Runners braced themselves for the heat and exposed route to compete over the 10km and came away smelling of success with a number of category winners. Four seems to be the magic number for Lee Dalton at the moment looking at his recent results as he crossed the line in fourth with a time of 36.28, Andy Todd was next back in 42.09 and 1st M50 followed closely by Alan Davidson 2nd M50 in 42.28. Next across the line was Paul Stalker 43.54, Andy Harris 47.22, Phil Fernyhough 47.59, first lady for Nidd and 2nd F45 Fiona Deacon 48.11, Carol Morgan 1st F35 48.51, Rob Snow 49.52, Dave Seaman 54.22, Tony Ledwaba-Chapman 1st M70 54.37, Debbie Gibson 54.22, Jenny Manning 56.54,  Helen Gregory 57.07, Michelle Smith 64.04, Ellie Deacon 64.12 running with her Dad Mike 64.14 and Judy Greenwood 69.36.

Across in Leeds the Jane Tomlinson 10km had already finished by the time Burton Leonard got under way and avoided the worst of the heat. Paul Manning was first home for Nidd in 49.47, Laura Nixon next in 52.52 and Noel Butler 1:03.33. Over on the west coast the Windmill Half saw Jillie Townend pounding the roads and recorded a time of 2:10.20.

Friday 12 July 2013

Saturday 29 June 2013

Racing takes a back seat at Nidd Valley.

Nidd Valley Road Runners kept the competitive streak alive last weekend even though races were thin on the ground, a growing Harrogate parkrun always has a Nidd Valley runner to be found on the start line. Andy Todd moved up an age group but still crossed the line first for Nidd with 19.46, followed by Maurice Kelly 21.20, a tie for Chris Buck and Paul Geary in 22.42, Tony Ledwaba- Chapman 27.20, Nick Iles, running with  his daughter in 30.53, Katie Edgar 32.07 and Clairwyn Richardson 32.40.

Saturday 22 June 2013

Seasoned runners tackle new horizons.

New races and seasoned runners go hand in hand. The Three Lakes Classic at Rother Country Park tempted four Nidd Valley Ladies to give it a go with its country location and superb vistas. Philippa Moorse has been racing the longer race and this 15 miler suited her finishing in 2:32.05, Debbie Gibson was back next in 2:36.47 followed closely by Annie Sweeting 2:37.06 and Judy Greenwood 2:50.44.

A fell race not commonly heard of locally is Model Hebog and Mark and Emma David showed their expertise over the 4.2 mile route, climbing 2461 feet along the way. Mark crossed the line in 86.22 and Emma in 94.20. Mark also ran at Buckden Fell Race, a slightly less arduous route in 55.31.

Wednesday 29 May 2013

Keep on running.

Race distance and race terrain are no object for runners at Nidd Valley Road Runners, weather it is a marathon or a quick burst around the Stray there is always a streak of black and gold to follow. Compasses at the ready

North, South, East or West, what ever direction the compass points there seems to be a Nidd Valley Road Runner at the end of it. A target race for a few was the Leeds Half Marathon, not the easiest of races for first timers. Dan Eagling, Paul Eagling, Julie Mooney and Jillie Townend made their debut at the distance with some great times. Dan 1:39.01, Paul 1:41.21, Julie 2:06.08 and Jillie 2:11.30 were joined by Lizzie Medwell who ran 1:54.45.
The latest Claro orienteering event headed to Knaresborough where Mark David finished second in 25.25 followed by Maurice Kelly in 32.15. Further South Emma David continued her running exploits with an outing to the Brecon 40 ultra, 40 miles and 9000 feet of climb into the wind and hail and finished in 9 hrs 30.
Taking the opportunity of a race on their doorstep, Knaresborough 10km at King James’s School had five Nidd Valley runners don their club colours. Lee Dalton was 3rd overall in 39.28, next up was Nat Welsby 43.20 (7th) followed by Nick Iles 53.48, Rob Snow 55.32 and Alison Iles 56.47.

Girl power all the way.

Girl power at Nidd Valley Road Runners was on a high over the bank holiday weekend. At the Cake Race deep in the heart of the Lancastrian Pennines, 10 miles and 1700 feet of climb across some of the Moors murderers territory was a tough outing. First back for Nidd was Carol Morgan 1:21.15, then Alan Davidson 1:21.38, Simon Harris 1:26.28, Mark David 1:30.57,Emma David 1:32.36, Sheena Jackson 1:34.32, Phil Robinson 1:35.09, Chris Buck 1:37.05 and Brian Sherwood 1:37.47. The girls managed to claim first Ladies team prize.
More girl power was in evidence at the Tadcaster Triathlon, three first timers, Emma Dooley, Amanda Metcalfe and Clairwyn Richardson took on the sprint distance and came out smiling. Emma was first back in 1hr 22, Amanda next with 1hr 28 then Clairwyn with 1hr 40.
Over in Halifax the aptly named Bluebell Trail Race covered 10 miles of beautiful countryside, Mike Deacon completed the course in 1:27.49 and Fiona Deacon managed 1:36.56 and scooped 2nd F45.
On home soil Paul Geary tackled the Belfast marathon, his first and was very happy to go under 4 hours with 3hr 56.
A few Nidders have been tackling the odd Orienteering event locally, two recent events at Bilton have seen Phil Robinson and Mark David competing. Phil taking the honours in the first with 39.08 and Mark 40.05 followed by Richard Kavanagh in 60.08. In the second event Mark reversed the outcome with 26.53 and Phil next with 29.28. Richard ran the short course in 30.51.

The most inspirational bunch by far.

Inspiration and aspiration are two words closely associated with anyone who runs and no more so than at Nidd Valley Road Runners where most have one foot in each camp. With twenty five athletes competing in a very diverse range of events at the weekend it is difficult to highlight just one performance, the one thing they did have in common though was running.
The largest contingent of Nidd Valley runners was at the Fountains 10k, just outside Ripon. A popular race won by Lee Dalton from Nidd Valley in 35.35, some 30 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. Next was Paul Stalker 42.53, Maurice Kelly 46.33, first Nidd Valley lady, Fiona Deacon 47.42, Sheena Jackson 48.40, Paul Manning 50.26, Dave Seaman 51.59, Helen Gregory 53.16, Debbie Gibson 53.22, Sarah Mattocks 58.46, Philippa Moorse 59.13, Judy Greenwood 59.49, Michelle Smith 1:00.33, Rebecca Ventress 1:03.02 and Aimi Bluman 1:04.46.
The longest distance covered was by Carol Morgan and Emma David, both running The Fellsman, a 60 mile tour of the Yorkshire Dales, carrying all your own kit. Carol covered the distance in an incredible 14 hours 42 mins and was rewarded with second lady, Emma came home in 16 hours 15 minutes.
Over in the Lake District the Hawkshead 17km Challenge saw Annie Burns and Bob Sweeting on the start line. Annie 1h 59 crossed the line just ahead of Bob 2h 04. Tim Harvey was in action at the Three Peaks, in a stellar field he came 13th out of 1000 in 3h 56.
Closer to home Christine Holleran made her way to Harewood for the re-arranged Wrap Up Warm 10km and finished 2nd F45 in 49.35. The Fleetwood 10 mile saw Jillie Townend tackle a windy, sandy course in 1:34.09(pb) and was 2nd F55.
Meanwhile it was Sam Fugil’s turn to make his marathon debut at Manchester. He was rewarded with a time of 3:55.28. RaceKit Mini Mountain Marathon is a race with a difference, rather than distance limiting your run, it is time. Phil Robinson and Mark David navigated themselves around the Peak District, covering as many miles and checkpoints as they could in 3 hours. In the end they managed a total of 13 miles and were 20th pair to finish.

A good mix of what we do best....run.

London was calling for many as all eyes looked south for the first big road event of the season. The marathon has dominated the conversation at Nidd Valley Road Runners for the past months but now it was race time. Mike Deacon had a tremendous run and was first Nidd back in 3:14.09, next across the line was Phil Fernyhough running an incredible 3:48.57. First back for the ladies was Jenny Manning clocking a pb of 4:19.24 followed by Sarah Gordon in her first marathon with 4:38.19.
Not to be out done the second race of the club championships took in a new race at Hawksworth, Over The Odda 10km was a primarily off road route organised by the local school. Nidd Valley had a very successful morning, Alan Davidson collected the 1st M50 prize with 49.10 and Carol Morgan won the 1st F35 with 50.52. Phillipa Moorse was next back with 1:13.02 followed by Sarah Gordon 1:18.00.
Simon Harris and Chris Buck were flying the flag for the fell runners over at Guisborough, superb conditions saw Simon back in 111.32 and Chris in 133.05. Another off road race that doesn’t get much press is the Runsunday event on Otley Chevin, a 3 mile route run every Sunday and is free to enter. Jillie Townend gave it a go and set a new F55 record of 27.31.
Duathlon’s seem to be enticing Emma Dooley on to the racing scene, heading over to Newby Hall for her latest foray. A run/cycle/run event Emma secured second lady in 1h 36 mins. Harrogate parkrun also saw Nidd Valley runners heading to the Stray for their weekend exercise. Dan Eagling has been chasing a new pb at Harrogate for some weeks and it all came together last week for a time of 20.57. Maurice Kelly was next to finish with 21.36 followed by Jillie Townend 26.58 and Tony Ledwaba-Chapman 30.14.

Awesome athletes

Goals are not just for football, athlete’s set them throughout the year and dedicate a lot of time and effort to completing them. Nidd Valley Road Runner Rachel Eastaff set her sights on Brighton Marathon, her first attempt at that awesome distance. Having trained through one of the toughest winters she toed the start line with other first timers. Rachel recorded a time of 4:20.05 of which she was incredibly pleased.

The ultra distance runners at Nidd Valley were also out at the weekend. Emma David headed south for the Calderdale Hike, taking in the Calderdale and Pennine countryside Emma opted for the 37 mile route. This event requires a lot of navigation towards the end and Emma managed to secure second lady overall. Andy Harris had a little further to run with the 53 miles at The Woldsman, he crossed the line in an incredible 12 hours 30 mins.

A mere 10km tempted Amanda Metcalfe and Jillie Townend over to Wakefield. the blustery and warm conditions gave runners an added challenge. Amanda crossed the line in 52.55 followed by Jillie in a pb of 55.23.
Harrogate parkrun saw four Nidd Valley Road Runners role up on Saturday. Alan Davidson was first back in 19.21, then Jillie Townend 27.01, Gill Douglas 30.28 and Kate Edgar 34.31.

Yorkshire Grit

Never shying away from a challenge some Nidd Valley Road Runners have been testing themselves to the limit. The Baildon Boundary Way is a very tough half marathon, all off road with some challenging terrain and not much in the way of level running. Three Nidd ladies took to the start line and came back un-scathed, Annie Burns was first back in 2:23.28, Sarah Chalmers next with 2:31.38 and Judy Greenwood 2:42.06.
Another tough cookie taking the bit between her teeth was Kathy Coates. As part of her preparations for The Yorkshire Warrior Kathy has taken on some 10km’s with a twist. The Wolf Run at Leamington was full of mud, obstacles and hills but Kathy feels it was all justified and is ready for April 20th.
Mark David has been continuing his quest in the Esk Valley Winter Series with a run in the Pinchthorpe Plod. With the previous fixture cancelled due to the weather Mark was keen to get back to it and on the dry solid ground made good time with 53.00 over the 6 mile route. He managed to squeeze another race in over the same weekend in Rossendale at Liver Hill and finished in 47.21 for the 5 mile course.
Nidd Valley also continued their support of Harrogate parkrun and sent the following runners. Andy Todd 18.28, Jonathon Easton 20.55, Christine Holleran 22.42, Stuart Hatfield 24.51, Dave Rushton 26.15, Jillie Townend 26.20, Michelle Smith 28.16 and Katie Edgar 33.47.

Friday 5 April 2013

Normal service has resumed.

Normal racing service was resumed over the Easter Weekend, with the snow receding and the winds reducing runners were able to compete. Guiseley Gallop was given the go ahead just 24 hours before the start and even the walk to the start had some struggling to stay up right. The mud didn’t prove too difficult for Nidd Valley Road Runners, it’s part of their running regime and Sheena Jackson managed to tear round in 52.21 and finish 2nd F35. Following her round were Julie Mooney 59.59, Lizzie Medwell 64.30 and Aimi Blueman 70.42.

The previous day Harrogate parkrun welcomed back its runners after a weeks break due to the snow. Nidd Valley saw a few new faces on the Stray for their first attempt at the 5km course. Dan Eagling gave another consistent run with 21.54, Christine Holleran was trying it for the first time and ran 23.14, followed by Jillie Townend 27.54. Another first timer was Michelle Smith with 29.29 and also running in her first parkrun Emma Edgar 30.52. Next across the line was Katie Edgar 32.56 just finishing in front of Clairwyn Richardson 33.10.

Over the Easter weekend the long awaited Bilton to Ripley bridleway opened and on Tuesday Nidd Valley ran from their headquarters at Harrogate Hockey Club along the route. Twenty Five members took advantage of the lighter nights and ran to Ripley returning through Killinghall and Knox Mill Lane.

Nothing stops the Nidd Valley Crew

Quite often the weather stops sport in its tracks, recently many fixtures have been cancelled and participants have been left wanting. Occasionally though there is a race that beats the odds and brings surprising rewards. The Grizedale 10 Trail Race in the Lake District gave runners amazing views covered in thick snow, two Nidd Valley Road Runners who experienced it first hand were Judy Greenwood and Annie Burns who both described it as ‘Like running through Narnia’. The finishing time of 117 minutes was just reward for a super event.

The first race of the Nidd Valley Road Runners Championships was the Thirsk 10 mile, battling strong winds on parts of the course, the going was hard. First back was Lee Dalton in 57.54 followed by Alan Davidson 1.04.14, Andy Todd 1.04.26, Fiona Deacon 1.16.36, Jenny Manning 1.23.18 (pb),Helen Gregory 1.26.02, Stuart Hatfield 1.26.19, first time in a Nidd vest for Sarah Donaldson 1.31.21, Helen Moorse 1.34.07, Phillipa Moorse 1.36.24, Jillie Townend 1.38.31 and Aimi Blueman 1.48.14.

Two Nidd Runners doing something different were Steve Newton and Emma Dooley, both competing in the Stokesley Duathlon, a run/bike/run competion. Steve finished in 2.08.06 and Emma finished in 2.15.53.

Mother Nature firmly in control

Its hard sometimes to find the motivation to go out in such prolonged cold conditions especially when Mother Nature is in control. However, the need to run takes over and Nidd Valley Road Runners have braced the elements to pursue their passion.

A newcomer to the race calendar is the Lightwater Valley 10 km Challenge, in aid of servicemen and women, it is growing in popularity and four Nidd Valley Ladies went to try it out. The course had something for everyone, first back for Nidd was Lizzie Medwell in 55.49, Rebecca Ventress, running at the top of her game, with a pb of 57.56, next came Julie Mooney 58.06 and Aimi Blueman 63.50(pb).

Over the Pennines two half marathons attracted Nidd Valley support, Liverpool saw Mike Deacon, 1 hour 27 and Fiona Deacon, 1 hour 38 finish fourth in their age groups. Meanwhile Stafford welcomed Stuart Hatfield, 1:55.16(pb) and Judy Greenwood 2:15.36.

The concept of parkrun sees thousands of people roll out of bed early on a Saturday and two Nidd Valley runners got up that little bit earlier to head to York, an all tarmac affair around the race course. Amanda Metcalfe pushed hard for a pb of 24.31 and Clairwyn Richardson, with tremendous encouragement ran a pb of 30.49. At Harrogate Andy Todd ran 19.34, Dan Eagling 21.35, coming back from injury, Dave Rushton managed 27.00 and Tony Ledwaba-Chapman ran 30.01

Friday 15 March 2013

Off the beaten track

With a plethora of 5km and 10km races being organised its great to find races which challenge a runner that bit more. Haworth Hobble is a 32 mile route up and down the valley’s near Keighley. Taking the bit between their teeth, Nidd Valley Ladies, Carol Morgan and Emma David ran a fantastic time of 5 hours 44 and took first ladies team. Earlier in the week Mark David travelled over to Sedbergh for a fell race dominated by young athletes, Mark finished the 3.8 mile course in 48.12.

Further south the Windmill Whizz is part of the Fell Race for Life series, two Nidd Valley Runners went over, Sam Fugil was first home for the club in 51.57 and Mark David quickly followed in 53.40. Another popular but low key event in the Dentdale 14, a challenging race with steep climbs. Mike Deacon finished in 1.42:16, first time in a Nidd Valley vest, Kathy Coates ran 1.54:58 and Fiona Deacon ran 1.57:29.

At Harrogate parkrun the cold weather was ever present but the highlight of the morning was Andy Todd breaking 19 minutes for the first time with 18.57. Next for Nidd was Maurice Kelly 21.36, Dan Eagling 21.53 and Tony Ledwaba-Chapman 28.01.

Friday 8 March 2013

Variety is the spice of life

When it comes to anything in life variety is the key to keeping things fresh and exciting. Nidd Valley Road Runners have certainly been doing just that. Trollers Trot is an 25 mile off road challenge through Wharfedale and two Nidd Ladies were on the start line. Carol Morgan ran an exceptional 3hr 43 for 3rd lady and Emma David recorded a pb of 3hr 55.

A new fixture to the running calendar is the Major Series, a set of 10km runs battling through mud, water and the odd obstacle. Two Nidd’s took up the challenge, Kathy Coates went round in 1:15.20 for 1st Lady over 40 and Nick Iles finished in 1:24.28.

Across the county the first fell running championship race took place at Glaisdale Rigg, a tough 8.5 mile course. Friday 1 March 2013

A not so slippery start to the year.

Race calendars have become very congested over the years and clubs try and entice you to enter theirs. However two such races that always attract a loyal following are the Snake Lane 10 mile at Pocklington and the Ilkley Fell Race, unfortunately they are often on the same day so runners have to choose either or. At Pocklington, on a very cold day, Nidd Valley’s Andy Todd continued his good form with a time of 1:02.45(pb), closely followed by Paul Stalker, 1:04.01. The Ladies had a good day, Lizzie Medwell 1:30.22(pb), Annie Burns 1:31.55, Rebecca Ventress, 1:32.39(pb) and Judy Greenwood 1:38.14.

Over in Ilkley the fell runners had little to bother them on a relatively dry course. Tim Harvey was first past the post for Nidd in 45.42, followed by Carol Morgan 51.28, then a close battle between Brian Sherwood 58.33, Mark David 58.59 and Phil Robinson 59.03. Sarah Chalmers finished in 85.28.

Harrogate parkrun continues to grow and Nidd Valley were in the thick of it. Dan Eagling was first back for Nidd with 21.24, Rick Dallston had his first parkrun experience in 24.24, then came Jon Reast 25.53, Jillie Townend 27.15, Stuart Hatfield 27.16, Lizzie Medwell 27.41 and Clairwyn Richardson 31.40.

Friday 22 February 2013

A quiet week at the office

Racing was thin on the ground last week for Nidd Valley and many took the opportunity to get some long training miles in for forthcoming marathons. For those choosing to race Harrogate parkrun is always a good bet and numbers on the ground are growing every week. Dan Eagling kept his good form and ran 22.56, Stuart Hatfield 24.52 and Julie Mooney 25.51 both recorded pb’s. Jillie Townend was next across the line with 27.29 followed by Kate Edgar 30.57 and Clairwyn Richardson 31.58.

On the Sunday Mark David continued his involvement in the Northern Runner Winter Fell Race Series over at Commondale in the Commondale Clart, the tenth race of the series. Mark ran well and recorded 49.18 over the 5 mile course. Phil Robinson travelled over to Cross Gates near Leeds for the fourth PECO XC League race. An incredibly muddy route around Barnbow Woods left many runners unable to stay upright but Phil soldiered on for a time just over 47 minutes.

Spreading the running love far and wide

On the hills Carol Morgan tackled the Wadsworth Trog, a 20 mile route in Calder Valley, finishing fifth lady in 4:02.77. Snowbound runners

With much of the fixture list abandoned due to the heavy overnight snowfall it was always going to be difficult for race organisers to put something on. However Harrogate parkrun, with an adjusted course, put on a run for those who wanted to, it even attracted some runners from their own parkrun which had been cancelled due to that same snow.
First across the line for Nidd Valley Road Runners was Paul Eagling 22.40, again showing his brother, Dan Eagling 23.11, a clean pair of heels. Next in were Jon Reast 29.32, Tony Ledwaba-Chapman 29.54 and Sue Reast 32.12.
Another race which survived the weather was the Ferriby 10 mile road race over in East Yorkshire, a popular race with Andy Todd who has become a regular participant. Andy ran strongly for a time of 64.54.
A late result in is from the Hebden 22 mile race, an off road route which this year had the added challenge of deep, uninterrupted snow. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Emma David showed true grit and completed the route in 4 hours 51 minutes.

Friday 25 January 2013

Three Nidd Valley Road Runners were on hand to receive awards, Dave Rushton, Most Improved Male Runner, Jillie Townend, Most Improved Female Runner and Tony Ledwaba-Chapman, Most Times Volunteered. Maurice Kelly made his way back safely in 22.14 and sibling rivalry saw Paul and Dan Eagling in a sprint for the line, Paul taking glory with 22.38 and Dan with 22.47. Next in was Paul Manning 25.23, Julie Mooney 28.13 and Jillie Townend 30.05.
With the weather taking its toll on many sporting events across the district a quick course change at Haworth meant the Soreen Stanbury Splash could go ahead. Mud glorious mud

The best way to complete a very successful 2012 season is to end it with a resounding win and that is what Lee Dalton at Nidd Valley Road Runners did. Having recced the route for the Ripon based Jolly Holly Jog just days before Lee knew exactly what conditions on the course were going to be and chose his footwear wisely. From the gun Lee took the field out quickly, ploughing through the deep mud holding the lead throughout, eventually finishing in 36.30, over 30 seconds ahead of the second man.

Nidd Valley put out a strong men’s team including Tim Harvey 40.48 (21st), Andy Todd 41.56 (32nd),Paul Stalker 43.14, Mike Deacon 44.34 and Maurice Kelly 46.17. First Lady for Nidd was Emma David 52.03 followed by Dave Rushton 58.49, Simon York 58.53, Stuart Hatfield 59.04, Lizzie Medwell 65.19 and Rebecca Ventress 65.45

For those who had refrained from excess parkrun gave runners the chance to start the New Year with the first run of the year on New Year’s Day. Brian Sherwood led Nidd Valley home with 23.52 then Paul Manning 24.28, Helen Gregory 24.39, in his first parkrun, Dave Seaman 25.17, Tony Ledwaba-Chapman 25.27, Jenny Manning 26.06, Julie Mooney 27.24 and John Manning 29.32
